If you graduate college with crooked teeth, you're less likely to get a "good-paying job" in the first place because crooked teeth look unprofessional. Maybe you'll say I'm blaming personal failures on crooked teeth, but to the extent that crooked teeth undermine someone's credibility, others are less likely to recommend them for that hot job or big promotion. A person can keep that Goofy(TM) smile so long as he/she doesn't mind being shut out of managerial roles in favor of a McJob.

this article is complete crap. i am a 22 year old male and i have always had crooked front teeth. my 2 front teeth overlap and i am always self conscious about it. I always try to look away or keep my mouth closed when i smile because i know people are judgmental and i don't want them to see my awful smile. It's really depressing. a lot of people judge a person based upon their smile. i am a funny guy but i can never smile like i wish i could. when i smile you see these ugly ass teeth glaring at you and i am always aware of it. I don't have the funds to pay for it myself and i don't have the heart to ask my parents to help me out. I just wish i could smile confidently without my smile being so hideous. it's hard to stay motivated to brush my teeth because they are already ugly as sin, why does it matter if i keep them clean? i am always depressed/self conscious about it.

I totally disagree with this article. I am female. 40 and had crooked teeth. It was very difficult growing up with crooked teeth. Mine was cross bite and overcrowded, basically ugly teeth. I had very little confidence and there were many times when guys wanted to talk to me I avoided them and it probably made them think I was just unfriendly and perhaps rude. I really wanted to talk and meet people but was very cautious of my bad teeth. When I was a teenager, no one in my group had bad teeth like mine and as a teenager I didn't want to be different, so it was really hard; I had to cover my mouth when I laughed. Everytime we took pictures, I made sure I only smiled with mouth closed. Anyway, last year I had enough of this misery. I was sick of hiding my teeth everytime I talked. I was sick of controlling how to laugh infront of people. I went to get the traditional metal braces fixed. They made me so happy you won't believe it. Braces changed my life and confidence. Now, I talk to everyone. Now, my teeth are straight even though they are not super perfect. My orthodontist said the braces will be taken off next month, so I am excited. Wearing braces is the best thing I've done for myself.

Dear Firsthand experiencer,

You are just 16 years, you have a long (and i am sure happy and prosperous) life ahead of you. Do not fret about your crooked teeth now, focus on how to complete your schooling/ college, get a degree and get a well-paying job. After that, you can get your teeth strightened. In fact, your teeth may just be the motivation you need to do something in your life and be successful. Just surround yourself with people who love you for what you are (however small that number is) and not your teeth. And remain focused on our dreams.

I dont know who you are, but i thought i must write this, as you seemed so depressed about this.

Good luck and god bless.

I would have to greatly disagree with everything in this article, I am a 16 year old female with crooked teeth and I have to say it unconditionally contributes a lot to my low self esteem. Even find myself crying over it sometimes. Some kids from school call me a shark behind my back. I am poor and my mom cannot afford braces for me, as being a single parent working only minimum wage. I would rather be missing a limb than deal with a smile that "only a mother could love". I am a very outgoing person and I feel paralyzed by society's demand for perfection before acceptance. I try to get a positive outlook on life but, if it wernt for the pain it would bring my mother I would possibly be considering the dreaded "S" word. I'm not one who usually succumbs to one way street of self pity but in this one area if my life I find it impeccably hard not to. I feel I can't talk to anyone with out the side track of them staring at my teeth. I understand that straight teeth don't give you self confidence, but that would breakdown an obstacle, of some sorts, that is blocking one from full potential.

I disagree with this article. I have two teeth that are up way too high and cross in front of my other teeth. I hate when people at my high school make me laugh because sometimes I forget to cover my mouth with my hand and people see my teeth and I feel very embarrassed because I know they are looking at my teeth. It affects me very much. I don't like smiling and I don't like talking in front of class because I feel like people will look at me and my teeth and think I don't have good hygiene. There was a guy in my school who used to call me names because of my teeth and it made me not want to go anywhere. Having bad teeth can definitely affect your self-esteem. My sister also had bad teeth and when she got them fixed she felt so much happier and she was able to be a lot more outgoing.

I have lived with imperfect teeth for 38 years. I should have received braces when I was a child, but unfortunately the dentist with whom I consulted, saw fit to remove my perfectly healthy left canine because it was growing above my other teeth. He should have removed a back tooth instead and used braces to re-align my other teeth. I have live my whole life with self-esteem issues because of this - always hiding my teeth when I smile.

I am a highly qualified professional person with multiple degrees and professional certifications. I believe that my career would be in a totally different place if the dentist had done what he should have, and fixed my teeth with braces. I might have been CFO of a large company by now - who knows?

Fortunately, I have now come accross a non-invasive cosmetic procedure which does not damage the underlying healthy teeth. So after 38 years of living with this source of low self confidence, I am taking a huge step and getting my gap fixed. My husband and I have been reluctant to do any of the other invasive procedures which we had heard about thus far - involving cutting off pieces of healthy teeth.
I wonder how different my life might have been, had the dentist done what he should have done.

I have 2 sons - one is developing the same problem as me - I will not hesitate to have braces fitted on him as I will not allow him to suffer the same pain and humiliation and low self image that bad teeth brought to me.

Bottom line - I believe that bad teeth problems in children should be fixed as soon as possible to enable them to reach their full potential in life. God bless you and give you wisdom in your decisions!!

Of all the people that I know, 99% of them, the reason that they have not gotten orthodontics is not because they are afraid of the procedure, it's the price. I am in the process of paying $4125 for orthodontics. Also I had to pay $1600 to get my wisdom teeth pulled because they were growing in sideways and would negitivly effect the braces. $650 to get my first upper premolars extracted because there was not enough room in my mouth. As a 26 year old with a 3 month old paying for my wife's education working at walmart, there's alot of budgeting involved. Most low income childrens parents did not want to, or could not want to fork out the $4000-$10,000 required to streighten there children's teeth. As young adults they struggle with social events, especialy including the workplace. People assume much about someone with a crooked teeth because they are afraid to smile. Someone who does not smile is viewed as stuck up or errogant. On the other side, if they do smile people that witness very crooked teeth assume that the person has bad hygiene even if they do everything they can to take care of there smile. Or simply that the person with crooked teeth doesnt care about there own appearance.
I am not talking about a little crooked, i am talking about those of us who have very visible abnormalities in the position of there teeth. (Teeth behind teeth and such)
Yes it does scar social confidence which hinders social development makeing the person not function well in society and at the work place and in many cases the individual's carrier suffers as a consaquence.
