Q. Who can be affected with breast cancer?
A. Any woman is at risk of breast cancer. Breast cancer normally affects women but there have been 1% cases where even men have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Chances of breast cancer do increase with age though even young women can get it.

Q. Does breast cancer result in death of the patient?
A. Breast cancer does not result in death. It should not be treated like the death sentence anymore as medical advancements and early detection s possible now. Breast cancer is a treatable cancer. If discovered early survival rate is almost 100%.

Q. What can be the risk factors that can be attributed to breast cancer?
A. There are several risk factors. The first one being that you are a female. Other factors include family history, the age at the onset and completion of woman’s menstruation, the total number of full term pregnancies, and previous history of benign breast biopsies. These are believed to increase your risk. It has been seen that the majority of breast cancers occur in women with NO risk factors. A woman’s chances of getting breast cancer increase with age. Also, the number of children you have, the age of your first pregnancy, again, the age of menstruation, family history, are all possible risk factors. Factors such as diet, exercise, and stress, may also contribute.

Q. What can I do to prevent breast cancer?
A. Early detection is the key and probably the best weapon to fight breast cancer. Although there is no known prevention, we can increase our chances of beating breast cancer by leading a healthy lifestyle, going through routine self-breast exams, getting a clinical breast exam, if recommended by our health care provider, and following guidelines for regular screening mammograms. Early detection of breast cancer makes breast cancer 100% curable.

Q. What to as the doctor?
A. We should ask your doctor about the prognosis at that point of time. We should ask the doctor about treatment options is available to fight breast cancer. What could be the best option for us personally? A doctor who is performing regular check ups on us should be in the best position to advise us. Get to know about various surgical options. Also about reconstruction, if required. Ask for information on the follow-up treatment or each of the different surgical options. Gather information about the number and types of breast surgeries the doctor has successfully performed etc.
