We hear the term antioxidants bandied about quite freely and they are often included in the list of ingredients in a lot of foods. The theory is that they help prevent cancer but how exactly do they do this and what are they? Antioxidants are substances that prevent the body’s cells from being damaged by free radicals.

These free radicals have the potential to cause cancer. How it works is that free radicals are unstable cells because they have lost one electron. Then, in an attempt to become whole, they take electrons from other healthy cells but in the process they create more free radicals. DNA can be damaged when electrons are taken from cells, which leads to the possibility of cancer developing. Read the rest of this entry »

Coffee seems to be a curb for many types of cancer. Link between coffee consumption and cancer risk are being reviewed very regularly. So the next time you make or order your latte you are doing yourself a favor in more ways than one.Initially just the opposite was considered true – that may be cancer and even moderate consumption of coffee may prove to be cancerous. But there is no scientific reason for believing that moderate consumption of coffee can increase the risk of developing cancer in any part of body.

According to the studies reviewed by researchers like Francesca Bravi, ScD of the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche “Mario Negri” in Milan, Italy, coffee drinkers as comapred to those who do not drink coffee are 41% less likely to have been diagnosed with liver cancer. For a daily cup of coffee people drink, the odds of their being diagnosed with liver cancer are dropped by 23%, compared with those who do not ever drink coffee. Read the rest of this entry »

Most men are not very careful about their health, and often ignore symptoms that they should actually be paying attention to. You must listen to what your body is trying to tell you and take yourself off for a medical checkup. There are some symptoms that are typical of cancer and it’s best to be prepared.

You must perform a self-examination of the testicles and scrotum every month and check for lumps. If there are lumps then, whatever the size, they can be an indication of testicular cancer. After the age of 50 you should also be aware of the signs of prostate cancer. If you have pain or difficulty when you are urinating, or have a frequent urge to urinate, or even a feeble flow of urine, or see blood in the urine then you should consult a doctor to rule out prostate cancer. If you have unrelenting pain in the pelvis that does not disappear with common medication then it could be a sign of either prostate or testicular cancer. So get it checked. It should be the most obvious answer but most people are not aware that diet may be directly linked with cancer. If you have the correct food habits it could help you to stave off cancer. Researchers have established that eating the right food does in fact help to revert the spread of cancer, while also thwarting its occurrence. Experts agree that a diet of fruits, salads, vegetables, fish, nuts, and sprouts is a good one.Of course diet alone cannot regress the advance of cancerous tumors, but the latter can be deprived of support. As for example, vegetables, and fruits such as grapes, carrots, and soya beans, which have cox-2 compounds that obstruct the growth of new blood vessels. This in turn stops the tumor from spreading. Vegetables and fruits are rich in antioxidants, which destroy free radicals. These free radicals are produced by the body and affect DNA. Read the rest of this entry »

Vegetarians are also at a risk of getting cancer in many ways because of the way they eat and what they eat. The risk certainly is lower amongst vegetarians than those whose diet is meat based though. Through this article I will share some facts and reasons why vegetarians are at a risk of being affected with cancer.

Sugar fuels cancer! Vegetarians tend to eat a lot of sugar. It’s a part of their breakfast, lunch, brunch, and dinner without their realizing it. They take it so much for granted and so casually as an everyday thing that they forget to take notice that sugar kills.

Vegetarians include sugar in some form as a part of their breakfast with cereals, a bite of donut, pancakes, tarts and so on and so forth…so even if they shun meat they are not reducing the risk of being affected with cancer as long as their sugar intake is not under control. Did you know that your doctor is not allowed to tell you about any herbal or natural products that could help you to beat the killer cancer. These are regulations set down by the drug companies and a doctor could lose his licence to practice if he was to tell you about any of these products.

Cancer has taken lives for generations with no known cure, it can be controlled to a certain extent in the early days with chemotherapy and other known drugs but it is not always a cure.

Cancer cells grow in the body and to have any hope of recovery these cells must be destroyed. Chemotherapy does destroy the cells but it also weakens your immune system which means the cancer cells can reoccur after a certain length of time. Read the rest of this entry »

Does Vitamin D Reduce Cancer Risk?

A study released recently says that if vitamin D intake is increased it may reduce the risk of developing cancer.

The findings are the latest in a growing list of evidence confirming that the ongoing guidelines related to diet of vitamin D may be very low.

For the moment, until more research and studies are conducted in this field this new finding should be viewed as basic and priliminary and therefore should not be treated as a definite reason to drastically increase vitamin D in any form especially by way of supplements, in an effort to prevent or reduce the chances of getting cancer. Prevention is better than cure and it applies to cancer also. We’d rather live and lead a healthy life by sticking to certain rules than having to worry later about such serious dieseases that we assumed can never hit us.

Anything and verything can trigger cancer germs or viruses. We can catch them from environment, from exessive drinking, genes or other reasons researchers are working on to find what exactly causes it. And more importantly why out of two people living in similar environment only one gets it. What is the metabolism of the person who did not get it and can such a state of body can be attained or is it something one is born with. Read the rest of this entry »
