With the warmer weather heading our way and hopefully the sunshine, everyone wants to develop that tanned and healthy look, especially the younger person.
At the first hint of sunshine the sun beds and deckchairs come for an airing and many people spends hours bathing in the heat and the suns rays.
You look bronzed and healthy and feel wonderful, but do you realise that the suns UV rays are the cause of many skin cancers.
It is ironic really that the things we most enjoy can do us the most harm. The sun can cause skin cancer. Smoking can lead to lung cancer and breathing difficulties. Chocolate causes us to put on weight along with all the goodies we enjoy and so can cause health problems. Drinking alcohol to excess can lead to alcoholism.
Of course you know all this but why should you worry? Read the rest of this entry »

There are many causes of itching, some are minor and can be easily dealt with, but other causes may be quite serious.
Itching can be caused by a reaction to a medicine, or an allergy to many things, including cosmetics or fabrics, contact with certain metals or contact with poisonous or stinging plants.
The itchy red welts of hives on the surface of the skin are usually an allergic reaction to certain foods or medicine.
Certain types of washing powders or liquids could be the reason, try changing the type of powder or liquid you use. Even certain types of soap can cause a reaction so stick to the one you know.

Although illness and diseases are the main topics I like to diversify to other subjects, today it is petty irritations, or not so petty irritations.
I am talking about things that come up in your life and cause pain or irritation for a short time.
Nothing serious of course but at the time they can cause you pain or discomfort and even make your life a misery for a while.
Itchy skin is one; it can drive you mad if you can’t get to scratch it. This can be caused by your skin being dry or insect bites. My remedy for that including the insect bites is Vaseline. It may seem slightly old fashioned with all the new and modern treatments and creams on the market today, but it works a treat and cost a fraction of those creams and tubes you buy.
Vaseline soothes the skin and it is great for dry lips as well, it is even mild enough for baby so put a jar in your medicine cupboard and forget those expensive creams and salves. Read the rest of this entry »
Every year thousands of people suffer from a stroke. It can be mild where the effects can soon wear off, or it can be serious where the patient is immobilized.
Effects suffered can be numbness, weakness, or paralysis of the face, arm, or leg, typically on one side of the body. Vision problems can also occur in one or both eyes, such as dimness, blurring, double vision, or loss of vision.
Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding is other forms that affect the patient. Symptoms vary depending on whether the stroke is caused by a clot or bleeding. The location of the blood clot or bleeding and the extent of brain damage can also affect symptoms.
In Washington US, a new device has been brought out it is called Penumbra, It is a newly approved device and the latest in a series of inside the artery attempts to boost recovery from a stroke which is the nations No 3 killer.
Penumbra is like a tiny vacuum cleaner for the brain: it suctions out clogged arteries in the hope of stopping the brain attack before it does permanent harm. It is a new treatment for stroke victims.
Penumbra is an option for patients who miss out on the early care care, it can be tried up to eight hours after a stroke strikes or if standard TPA treatment fails.
Penumbra is a tiny tube, the specialist thread the tube inside a blood vessel at the groin and push it up the body until it reaches the point where the blood vessel is clogged. It sucks up the clot bit by bit to restore the blood flow. It works just like a vacuum cleaner.
This treatment is still being studied by doctors and it depends on the seriousness of the stroke on whether it can be used. It is a learning curve at present although good results have been shown and the Californian based Penumbra Inc received a surprise speedy approval from the Food and Drug Administration in late December.
Have you ever wondered why some people live to great age and others die much younger?
Is it what they eat, where they live, or does their job have any thing to do with it?
What does rule our life span and are we in a position to change the rules and live a long and happy life?
In many different areas of the world it is a known fact that people do live longer. For instance in the Himalayas, in a place called the Hunza Valley centenarians are nothing unusual. Is it the air or the food they eat that aids their long life?
Apricots are one of the staple diets of these people, along with other fruits like cherries and mulberries.
Apricots are not as common in some countries but even dried apricots or apricot jam and other preserves are very beneficial to your diet, they bring health and longevity which is what every one is aiming for. Read the rest of this entry »

Cell phones these days are your camera, video recorder, hand-held computer, apart from your lifeline to staying in touch with your work and family.

The emission of EMR (electromagnetic radiation) from cell phones continues to become a growing concern. Government doesn’t seem to be doing much in spreading this awareness because big-time profits and government revenue is linked to it.
Cell phones give out radiation plume. Another important aspect to keep in mind is that majority of cell phone headsets have a wire that can function like an antenna, and simply make matters worse. The cell phone industry and the government have suppressed scientific data which go against using cell phones to protect their own interest.
To minimize cell phone radiation we can practice the following things: Make sure that you are not talking on cell phone unless you are using a speakerphone or headset specifically designed to reduce radiation. Read the rest of this entry »
