From Where Should Women Get Their Calcium and Why?

Women (and men alike) can their get calcium from raw milk, vegetables, almonds, yogurt, and sardines etc. Some people also make calcium citrate at home. Eggshells are also considered high in calcium.

Calcium from food is absorbed and utilized better by our body than calcium from a pill. Supplements are supplements as the name suggests. And food is food. Let us not think of replacing food with supplements at any stage or given point of time. It does not work. Raw milk, green veggies are the biggest and best sources of calcium. Your best choice is always to opt for nutrients the way nature intended in the first place. Which certainly is not by swallowing pills. Go for a healthy balanced diet.

Calcium from food can prove to be more effective than calcium one gets from supplements. It found that women who get most of their daily calcium from food sources have healthier bones and greater bone density, even though those who took more supplements tended to have higher average levels of calcium.

Calcium from dietary sources is usually more completely absorbed than calcium from supplements, which could explain the difference. Women who got getting calcium from foods also had higher estrogen levels; estrogen is needed to maintain bone mineral density. The connection between dietary calcium and estrogen is as yet unknown, although it could be the result of eating plant sources containing the hormone.

Some things that affect absorption of calcium in our body adversely are, alcohol intake, total calcium intake, and exercising in excess.

Vitamin D is also important for calcium absorption, so make sure that you are getting plenty of safe sun exposure this summer. Because of this, adequate vitamin D levels help to prevent osteoporosis and hip fractures.

Recipe of calcium supplement you can make at home: Take 1 raw egg and place in a jar. Dip it completely in lemon juice and refrigerate it for 24 to 36 hours. Gently remove the egg, which would have become soft, as the calcium would have hardened. You can use the liquid as your homemade calcium supplement. This is an excellent and absorbable form of calcium that is cheap. You can add it to your salad dressings or simply have a tablespoon everyday with water.

I have to admit. I use supplements. I know I don’t have the healthiest diet and I’d rather have the regular supply of calcium than fall short with my food selections. It’s a weakness that I’m working on and I hope to be able to enjoy a healthy diet that will cover my calcium needs, but in the mean time, I am glad supplements exist!
