We hear more about stem cells these days and what they can achieve. A stem cell is an organism that is derived from embryos; these are embryos that are developed from eggs that have been fertilized in a vitro fertilization clinic. They are then donated for research with the consent of the donors. These eggs are not fertilized in a woman’s body and the embryos from which human embryonic stem cells are taken are mostly only four or five days old. They are a hollow microscopic ball of cells called blastocyst.

Stem cells are one of the most exciting discoveries of biology but as research into stem cells progresses, more scientific questions arise as quickly as new discovery are made.
Research on stem cells is advancing knowledge about how an organism develops from a single cell and how healthy cells replace damaged cells in adult organisms. This area of science is also leading scientists to investigate the possibility of cell-based therapies to treat disease such as regenerative or reparative medicine. Read the rest of this entry »

Vegetarians are also at a risk of getting cancer in many ways because of the way they eat and what they eat. The risk certainly is lower amongst vegetarians than those whose diet is meat based though. Through this article I will share some facts and reasons why vegetarians are at a risk of being affected with cancer.

Sugar fuels cancer! Vegetarians tend to eat a lot of sugar. It’s a part of their breakfast, lunch, brunch, and dinner without their realizing it. They take it so much for granted and so casually as an everyday thing that they forget to take notice that sugar kills.

Vegetarians include sugar in some form as a part of their breakfast with cereals, a bite of donut, pancakes, tarts and so on and so forth…so even if they shun meat they are not reducing the risk of being affected with cancer as long as their sugar intake is not under control. Carcinoid cancer is considered rare and not a lot is known as to the treatment for it. When my husband was told he had cancer I was filled with dread and imagined him leaving me within weeks or just a few months, I cried myself to sleep most nights and found it hard to cope with.

His next appointment at the hospital was to find out how far the cancer had gone and how long we could expect to be together.

The consultant didn’t look as grim as I suspected he would be and his first words had us both thinking.

He said “I have some good news and some bad news for you, first of all the bad news, you do have cancer” this of course we already knew so what could the good news be! Read the rest of this entry »
